Emily Tobey
Dr. Emily Tobey received her undergraduate, master's and doctorate degrees
in speech-language pathology and speech science. She served as an
Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor in the Kresge
Hearing Research Laboratory of the South, Department of
Otorhinolaryngology; Department of Communication Disorders, School of
Allied Health Professions, and Department of Removable Prosthodontics,
Louisiana State University Medical Center, New Orleans, Louisiana prior to
joining the faculty of the University of Texas at Dallas as the Nelle C.
Johnston Chair in Early Childhood Communication Disorders. Her honors
include Summer Distinguished Lecturer-in-Residence at the Department of
Communication Sciences, Texas Woman's University, Denton, Texas, July,
1983; Distinguished Academy Scientist, Louisiana Academy of Sciences,
1987;
Fellow, American Speech-Language and Hearing Association, 1988; Visiting
Scholar Fellowship, Australian Bionic Ear and Hearing Research Institute,
Department of Otolaryngology, University of Melbourne, Melbourne,
Australia, 1992; Visiting Research Professor, Department of
Otolaryngology,
University of Montpellier, Montpellier, France, 1993 and 1998. She has
received external funding from the National Institutes of Health and
private foundations for the past 20 years. She has served on NIH study
sections, presented at the National Consensus Conference on Cochlear
Implants, served as a working member on the committee "Research and
Research Training Needs of Oral/Auditory Hearing-Impaired Persons"
sponsored by the NIH, and served as a NIH-NIDCD Expert Scientific Panel
Member for revising the "Speech and Speech Disorders" section of the
National Strategic Plan. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles
on communication and its disorders.
